The Enneagrammatic Linguistic Interface (ELI) for artificially intelligent organic computers was first developed by the Israeli company Breath Logic before being released as an open source project and adopted by SEDA’s Center for Education, Research, and Applications (CERA). ELI depended solely on human-vocalized commands and inquiries, which it would parse for contextual semantic meaning and translate into the native commands of the machine for which it served as an interface. It was capable of responding with human-like voice synthesis in addition to text. Its learning logic made use of research into personality typing and biases to become a better and more responsive work partner for the various humans with which it interacted. By its fourth version, the software had come to take on more of the functions of a true operating system, and it gained sensory net input to be able to gather information from and react to the environment as a whole. The latter capability made ELI a good choice for human-computer interface aboard spacegoing vessels, especially with the addition of subvocalization streams contributed by humans’ internal networks. Version 5.1 introduced more personality growth and response, and what was to become its most popular feature: a female voiceset, dubbed ELISE by researchers at CERA. Although, strictly speaking, ELISE is merely an add-on for ELI, and is in any case not actually an acronym for anything, nevertheless most people have come to refer to the entire interface simply as “ELISE.”
