Hi, Tom and Nicole!
I wanted to stop by and say hello as a fellow LEGO webcomic author! It looks like you are off to a fantastic start. I hope you’ll stop by and visit my own strip, The Adventures of the S-Team - LEGO superheroes!
You can find it at http://ianthealy.comicgen.com. The special features/author commentary/reader comments are available at http://adventuresofthes-team.blogspot.com.
Ian
Where did the crazy guy get a sword? And where were the colonists supposed to be going?
Ian– Thanks for dropping by! S-Team is one of the LEGO comics we looked to for inspiration: “How do the folks who’ve been doing this awhile do it.” I thought the recent crossover idea was a lot of fun, too. Anyone who likes this LEGO comic artform should definitely check your site out. We’d be glad to exchange links, if you like!
Ty– Both good questions. Nicole and I both like books and movies and video games that make you wonder “Hey, what’s going on with that?” because it’s fun when you put it all together: “A-ha!” So we’ll be doing some of that as the story continues.
In the next episode (1:3), we’ll find out WHY Donner has both a sword AND a gun (besides looking stylishly piratical), but the question of WHERE he got it will linger a little longer. (The real answer, of course, is because I have a lot of LEGO pirates and knights and I simply had to work swords in somehow!)
As for where they’re supposed to be going, no one in the story has said yet, but the first page of episode 1:1 is the same computer text log the characters have been looking at. It says their original destination was “Colonization Candidate 12,” which suggests it was one of several planets (or moons, I suppose) that were under consideration for colonization. Maybe we can cover the colonization program more in depth soon with our “encyclopedia” and “CERA” blog entries.
By the way, I’m sure the text log was somewhat confusing when readers first encountered it (as it should have been), but since the characters have been discussing it, a lot more of it should make sense now if you go back and take a look at it!
One of the things about a story like this is that it take a lot of exposition: Who are these people? Where are they going? What are they talking about? Some of it will be answered through dialogue, some of it will rely on the readers’ knowledge of the sci-fi genre (”What is stasis?”), and some of it will be left hanging for awhile.
Now, if we just contradict ourselves or break continuity, maybe we’ll rely on astute readers to help bail us out.
